A Kogi teacher beaten to death has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria. Michael Samuel Idoko, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly candidate for Ogugu State Constituency, publicly condemned the brutal killing of 22-year-old schoolteacher Mariam Usman. Furthermore, he called on security agencies to act without delay.
Mariam worked as a teacher at Brains Mind School in Ugbamaka Igah, Okpo District, Olamaboro Local Government Area. Her death has shaken the local community and drawn national attention. Consequently, calls for justice are growing louder by the hour.
How the Kogi Teacher Beaten to Death Case Unfolded
The tragedy began on June 17, 2026. Mariam reportedly administered corporal punishment to a pupil who misbehaved during class. That evening, the pupil’s father, identified as Ishaq Abdullahi, allegedly went to her home and assaulted her. Things, however, did not stop there.
According to the deceased’s family, Abdullahi’s wife later attacked Mariam on her way to the mosque. The attacker reportedly beat and publicly humiliated her. Then, on June 18, three additional individuals allegedly joined in another assault. During this second attack, Mariam sustained severe injuries and lost consciousness.
She initially received treatment at a hospital in Ugbamaka. However, doctors later transferred her to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further care. Despite these efforts, she passed away on June 25, 2026 — eight days after the first assault.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed key details of the incident. State police spokesperson Saliu Oyiza Afusat stated that preliminary investigations verified the attack at the school premises. Officers visited the scene and documented evidence. Additionally, authorities arranged for an autopsy at General Hospital, Ankpa. The suspects, however, fled before police arrived. Efforts to apprehend them are currently ongoing. Upon arrest, the case transfers to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Idoko Condemns Killing, Demands Justice for the Kogi Teacher Beaten to Death
PDP candidate Idoko did not mince words in his reaction on Sunday, June 28. He described the incident as “barbaric, heartbreaking, and a gross violation of human dignity.” Moreover, he stressed that no dispute, regardless of its nature, should ever cost someone their life.
“I condemn in totality the gruesome killing of Mariam Usman. No disagreement or misunderstanding, regardless of its nature, should ever result in the loss of a precious human life. This is painful, unacceptable, and a tragedy that must not be ignored,” Idoko stated.
Beyond expressing grief, he directed a firm message at security agencies. Specifically, he called on both the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to carry out a swift and thorough investigation.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” he said. Idoko further urged authorities to arrest every individual who participated in the assault or contributed to Mariam’s death.
Importantly, the PDP candidate also warned against jungle justice. He reminded residents that every Nigerian citizen deserves the protection of the law. “We cannot continue to tolerate acts of lawlessness where individuals assume the roles of judge, jury, and executioner,” he said. “Nigeria is governed by laws, and every grievance should be resolved through lawful means, not violence.”
Community Urged to Stay Calm While Suspects Remain at Large
In addition to his demands for justice, Idoko appealed to residents of Olamaboro Local Government Area. He asked them to remain calm and fully cooperate with security agencies during the investigation. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to Mariam’s family.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the late Mariam Usman. I pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this painful loss and grants the departed eternal rest. As a society, we owe her and her family justice,” he said.
Idoko believes that securing justice in this case goes beyond one family’s grief. Rather, it carries broader implications for society. A just outcome, he argued, would reinforce public confidence in the rule of law. Additionally, it would help deter similar acts of violence in the future.
This case also raises serious concerns about the safety of teachers across Nigeria. Educators routinely face the challenge of maintaining classroom discipline. Yet, as this tragedy shows, their professional decisions can sometimes put their lives at risk.
