Then there&#8217;s the version that&#8217;s actually happening employees opening browser tabs, feeding sensitive data into free AI tools, and getting things done without ever filing a request with IT. That second version has a name: shadow AI. And it&#8217;s costing companies far more than they realize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">According to IBM research, the average data breach already runs somewhere between $4.4 million and $4.8 million. But when shadow AI is involved, that figure climbs by an additional $670,000 per incident. The numbers alone should be enough to make any executive sit up yet awareness of the problem at the top doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean visibility into what&#8217;s happening across the rest of the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">That&#8217;s the real issue. While C-suite leaders are busy vetting enterprise AI purchases and sitting through cybersecurity conference panels, a much quieter, more pervasive risk is spreading through the company&#8217;s everyday workflows. Nearly every employee is using some form of AI for something. A Forbes analysis found that the ten most commonly used shadow AI applications had serious security shortcomings, with the three worst lacking basic protections no encryption, no multifactor authentication, and no audit logging whatsoever. They received outright failing grades when assessed for security efficacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Meanwhile, 90% of companies are using AI in some official capacity, yet fewer than one in five have any formal rules governing how it&#8217;s used. That&#8217;s for approved, corporate-sanctioned AI. The gap widens dramatically when you factor in unsanctioned use across every level of the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Why Traditional Security Tools Miss It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Shadow AI isn&#8217;t something most existing security infrastructure was built to catch. According to Gartner&#8217;s EAP Magic Quadrant assessments, the leading platforms in this space are capable of identifying every AI tool in use across an organization&#8217;s endpoints and networks\u00a0 including both sanctioned enterprise deployments and unauthorized public apps running quietly in employee browsers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Beyond detection, these platforms can surface AI usage baked into build environments before products even go live, and they can continuously monitor shadow AI agents, flagging the risks they introduce in real time. That level of visibility is something older tools simply aren&#8217;t engineered to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Detection Is Only Half the Battle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Finding where shadow AI exists is necessary, but not sufficient on its own. They map out attack paths that span multiple domains: identity, endpoint, cloud, and network. The tools are too accessible, the benefits too immediate, and the habit already too widespread to expect a clean break. But that doesn&#8217;t mean companies are without options. At this point, they almost certainly are.
