A viral skincare video has sparked serious alarm among health professionals. The footage shows a woman pressing a live snail against her face to harvest its mucin โ a trendy skincare ingredient praised for hydrating and anti-ageing benefits. But doctors are now sounding the alarm loud and clear: this live snail skincare practice is genuinely dangerous, and Nigerians in particular should avoid it.
Why Live Snail Skincare Can Seriously Harm You

Egemba Fidelis, widely known as Aproko Doctor, is a medical doctor and health influencer. He addressed the trend directly in a video posted to Instagram. Crucially, he did not dispute the value of snail mucin itself. Instead, he took aim at the misguided idea that applying a raw, living snail to your face is somehow more beneficial.
“I know they have deceived that person with ‘You are getting it straight from the source,’” he said. He then laid out exactly why this reasoning is flawed.
First, there is the parasite problem. The most common snail species in Nigeria โ the Giant African Land Snail โ carries a parasite called rat lungworm. This organism can cause a rare but dangerous form of meningitis, which is an inflammation of the brain. According to Fidelis, land snails are among the most common carriers of this parasite.
Second, hygiene is a real concern. Many of these snails are sourced from bushes and other unsanitary environments. Therefore, bacteria on the snail’s body and slime can easily enter the skin โ especially if the skin is broken or sensitive. Additionally, unprocessed snail mucus may trigger allergic reactions, particularly in people with shellfish or mollusc sensitivities.
Dr. Frederick Unuigbokhai, a company doctor at the Aim Group of Companies, echoed these concerns strongly. He warned that snails carry multiple parasites with the potential to cause severe complications. In extreme cases, infections tied to these parasites have been linked to blindness or death. Parasites such as Strongyloides stercoralis can produce symptoms including headaches, low-grade fever, neck stiffness, and even loss of consciousness.
Furthermore, the World Health Organization has noted that parasitic diseases linked to snails remain a pressing global health concern. One such disease โ schistosomiasis โ affects nearly 240 million people worldwide, with more than 700 million living in at-risk areas.
Basiru Kwaifa, a scientific officer at the Kebbi State Ministry of Health, added some balance. He noted that properly processed snail mucin is generally considered safe. However, scientific research on its broader effects remains limited. Some individuals may still experience side effects even from the commercial versions.
Safe, Affordable Alternatives for Healthy Skin
Doctors agree: you do not need live snails โ or any exotic ingredient โ to achieve healthy, glowing skin. In fact, several effective alternatives already exist in Nigerian homes and markets.
Drink more water. Fidelis was direct on this point: “The cheapest facial you can get in Nigeria is water.” Dehydrated skin cells look dull, tired, and wrinkled. Dr. Unuigbokhai recommended drinking two to three litres of water daily. He also advised limiting excessive sun exposure, eating fruits and vegetables for essential vitamins, and getting at least six to eight hours of sleep per night.
Eat vitamin-rich local foods. Fidelis pointed to collagen as the key protein that keeps skin firm โ and vitamin C as the nutrient that helps the body produce it. Fortunately, Nigeria is rich in vitamin-C sources. Tomatoes, oranges, bell peppers, bitter leaves, and ugwu all fit the bill. “You do not need to import anything, yet you are looking for snails to put on your skin,” he said pointedly.
Research also suggests that high consumption of processed foods or excess milk may contribute to acne. Kwaifa noted that fibre and omega-3 fats could additionally help manage breakouts, though more research is still needed. Prioritise sleep and sun protection. During sleep, the skin naturally repairs itself. Staying up until 2 a.m. regularly, Fidelis warned, will make your skin look noticeably dull. He also emphasized the importance of sunscreen for everyone โ not just fair-skinned individuals. “Ultraviolet damage is real,” he said simply.
Quit smoking. Kwaifa described smoking as a major accelerator of premature skin ageing. Smoking constricts small blood vessels, reduces blood flow, and depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients. It also degrades collagen and elastin โ the proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. Repeated facial movements while smoking, moreover, deepen wrinkles over time.
Manage stress actively. To support both skin health and general well-being, Kwaifa recommended getting sufficient sleep, staying physically active, balancing your workload, and practising relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga. Making time for enjoyable activities and maintaining strong social connections also helps.
