Atiku Tinubu Security Warning Follows Oyo Rescue

An Atiku Tinubu security warning has emerged just hours after Nigerian troops freed abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, urged President Bola Tinubu to put national security ahead of campaign events, even while praising the successful rescue mission in Ogbomoso.

The former vice president’s statement, released Saturday through his aide Phrank Shaibu, welcomed the freedom of the students and teachers. However, it also carried a pointed message: leadership, he argued, means showing up when it matters most.

Atiku’s Security Concerns Take Center Stage

According to Shaibu’s statement, Atiku commended the bravery and professionalism of Nigeria’s Armed Forces and other security agencies. Their coordinated effort, he noted, made the rescue possible. Still, he found it notable that the children regained their freedom on the same day Tinubu’s party rolled out its “Door-to-Door” campaign for the 2027 election.

“No serious government should be consumed by the politics of re-election while innocent schoolchildren have remained in the custody of kidnappers for weeks,” Atiku said. He added that rescuing citizens and restoring safety must always come before political ambition. In his words, “Politics can wait; the lives of innocent children cannot.”

Furthermore, Atiku argued that while soldiers performed admirably, the presidency missed a crucial opportunity. Nigerians, he suggested, expected to see their commander-in-chief take charge publicly and immediately after the operation succeeded.

Atiku believes the president should have addressed the nation alongside defence chiefs right after the rescue. Such an appearance, he explained, would do more than announce good news. It would brief citizens on operational details, honor the troops’ courage, and reassure families still waiting for loved ones in captivity.

Instead, the announcement fell to the president’s spokesman, while Tinubu remained visibly engaged in political activity. Atiku described these moments as more than routine press events. Rather, they represent defining displays of leadership that build public trust and lift military morale.

He also invoked a proverb to illustrate his point: “When the drum of danger beats, the village chief does not send a messenger to dance in his place.” Meanwhile, he stressed that leadership isn’t measured only by battlefield victories but also by the courage shown from the nation’s highest office during defining moments.

Symbolism, Atiku noted, plays a powerful role in the fight against terrorism. When citizens witness a president speaking with conviction after a major security success, they draw confidence. Atiku cautioned that celebrating the Oyo rescue shouldn’t overshadow an uncomfortable truth. Many other Nigerians remain in captivity, including abducted schoolchildren in Borno State and other affected regions. Consequently, he urged the federal government to maintain unrelenting pressure on bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists until every victim returns home safely and communities regain lasting peace.

In his view, no re-election campaign matters more than protecting Nigerian lives. The greatest political mission any president can pursue, he said, is ensuring the safety of citizens nationwide.

This latest intervention adds to a growing national conversation about Nigeria’s security architecture. Other public figures, including the Sultan of Sokoto and former Vice President Peter Obi, have also weighed in following the rescue, calling for stronger protections around schools and vulnerable communities.
