Nigerian Engineering Olympiad Rewards Student Innovators With N50m Prize

The Nigerian Engineering Olympiad just crowned its first set of winners, and the results highlight how much homegrown talent exists across the country’s universities. Enactus Nigeria partnered with several major organizations to launch this competition, and together they aim to turn student innovations into real, commercially viable businesses. The maiden edition, held recently in Lagos, drew hundreds of student teams from across Nigeria.

Building the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad Through Strategic Partnerships

Enactus Nigeria didn’t build this initiative alone. Instead, the organization teamed up with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Renaissance Africa Energy Company, and First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company (First E&P). Together, these partners created the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad specifically to close the gap between classroom engineering education and real industry needs.

According to Country Director Michael Ajayi, the response exceeded expectations from the start. Organizers received 375 applications representing 984 students from 80 tertiary institutions nationwide. From that pool, only 30 teams advanced to the regional stage. Ultimately, just 12 institutions made it through to the grand finale.

Ajayi explained that Enactus Nigeria focuses on partnering with forward-thinking organizations to co-create solutions for pressing community challenges. “We have remained steadfast in our mission to empower young people to use entrepreneurial action to solve the world’s greatest challenges, starting with those in their immediate communities,” he said. The program emphasizes data-driven thinking, sustainability, and entrepreneurial problem-solving throughout every stage.

Winning Innovations Tackle Real Community Problems

Students from Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Adamawa State, ultimately claimed the grand prize. Their winning innovation, Ubuntu Sapphire, is a community-powered rapid alert system. It connects households through affordable devices, allowing residents to instantly notify neighbors and emergency responders during crises. For their achievement, the team received N50 million in prize money. Additionally, their faculty will receive a fully furnished engineering building.

The University of Ibadan secured first runner-up honors with an equally impressive project. Their innovation, Aurora Birth, is a health-tech suite designed specifically to reduce neonatal deaths linked to birth asphyxia. The solution targets low-resource healthcare settings where such technology often remains unavailable. As a result, the team walked away with N30 million, plus N75 million worth of engineering equipment for their faculty.

Meanwhile, the University of Jos claimed third place with FarmAnchor, a solar-powered, AI-enabled device built for smallholder farmers. The technology uses multispectral imaging alongside edge-based machine learning to detect crop pests, diseases, and soil deficiencies early. Because early detection matters so much for small farms, this innovation could meaningfully improve agricultural yields. Innovation as the Path to Economic Strength

Beyond the prizes themselves, keynote speakers used the event to emphasize a broader economic message. Dr. Emmanuel Ajani, Deputy Director of the Engineering Infrastructure Department, delivered remarks on behalf of NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu. According to Ajani, countries that dominate today’s global economy aren’t necessarily those blessed with abundant natural resources. Rather, they’re the nations that continuously innovate, commercialize research, and build technology-driven industries.

Rather than simply celebrating academic achievement, the competition pushes students toward practical, market-ready solutions.
