The France Senegal World Cup 2026 Group I opener at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey began as a genuine contest and ended as a statement of intent from one of the tournament’s heaviest favourites. France opened their Group I campaign with a convincing 3-1 win over Senegal at New York New Jersey Stadium. Kylian Mbappé scored twice and made history in the process, while Bradley Barcola’s chip added gloss to a result that flatters Les Bleus only slightly because Senegal were excellent for long stretches and deserved far more than what the final scoreline suggests.

A Flat First Half, Then Mbappé Breaks the Deadlock

France started poorly and Senegal should have led after a nervy opening 45 minutes. Nicolas Jackson raced clear on the counter but his low shot hit the post, and Ismaila Sarr squirmed a cross into the area, racing onto the ball just six yards out but side-footing over the bar a miss he will be replaying for some time. France registered zero shots on target in the entire first half, with Didier Deschamps visibly frustrated at the interval.

The second half told a very different story. Desire Doue curled an effort just wide after a long ball forward got France going, then Michael Olise was played in after France won the ball back in midfield, but his low shot was saved well by Édouard Mendy. The pressure finally told. France broke through as Mbappé finished inside the box to put Les Bleus ahead in the 66th minute.

Mbappé Makes History – Then Senegal Respond Before France Close Out

With his goal, Mbappé tied Just Fontaine as France’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup with 13 goals a milestone that drew roars from the French end of a packed MetLife Stadium. Barcola made a brilliant run in the 82nd minute and Rabiot found him from the defensive half a beautiful chip over Mendy’s outstretched arm made it 2-0.

Nicolas Jackson fired a brilliant strike into the top corner from the right side of the box, beating Maignan with a sensational finish but it didn’t count. However, Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in the 90th+5th minute, before Mbappé added his second in the 90th+6th minute to seal the result and put any lingering doubt to bed.

This was only the second time these nations had met at a World Cup. The only prior meeting saw Senegal defeat defending champions France 1-0 in a major upset at the opening match of the 2002 FIFA World Cupa result that has lingered in French memory ever since. There will be no repeat this time around. Wikipedia

France Top Group I – But Questions Remain

France top Group I after matchday one, and on paper the result is emphatic. But Senegal have been favoured for so many World Cups to make a deep run, and this tournament is no different they competed at the highest level for most of this match and will take confidence into their remaining fixtures. For France, the first-half display will be a concern. Deschamps has the talent to correct it, but better sides than Senegal will punish them if they start the same way.
