The Oyo school abduction rescue finally came after a month-long, intelligence-driven offensive that dismantled the terrorist network holding 44 pupils and teachers captive. Security forces systematically disrupted the group’s leadership, logistics, informants, and forest hideouts. Eventually, the mounting pressure forced the kidnappers to release every victim unconditionally.
The breakthrough resulted from a tightly coordinated, multi-agency effort. Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, led the operation. Meanwhile, several agencies joined forces, including the Office of the National Security Adviser through its Counter Terrorism Centre, the Defence Headquarters, and special forces from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps all played key roles. Local vigilantes, hunters, and members of the Amotekun Corps also contributed significantly to the mission’s success.
How the Oyo Kidnap Victims’ Rescue Unfolded
Terrorists abducted the victims from Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State on May 15, 2026. Consequently, authorities launched an extensive operation aimed not only at freeing the hostages but also at destroying the criminal network behind the attack.
According to the Nigerian Army, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma explained that troops spent over a month identifying and dismantling the syndicate’s operational backbone. Specifically, they targeted the group’s kingpins, logistics links, informants, and hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park Forest and other locations nationwide.
“These arrests completely disorganised the group, exerted overwhelming pressure on them and ultimately led the terrorist group to unconditionally release the pupils and teachers,” the Army’s statement noted. Furthermore, officials confirmed that additional operations will continue in the coming weeks.
Casualties and Careful Planning Behind the Operation
Military commanders designed the mission to protect the hostages while minimizing collateral damage. Even so, the operation came at a cost — some security personnel lost their lives during the rescue effort. Officials emphasized that troops planned every step carefully to avoid harming innocent civilians while working to free the children safely.
Doctors are currently treating the rescued pupils and teachers at an undisclosed hospital. Afterward, authorities will hand them over to the Oyo State Government so families can begin the reunification process.
Major General Nnebeife described the mission as proof of what strong intelligence sharing and coordinated planning can achieve. “Beyond securing the release of the victims, our objective was to dismantle the criminal infrastructure that enabled the kidnapping and prevent similar attacks,” he said.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his strategic direction and consistent support throughout the operation. Additionally, he praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and residents for standing behind security agencies during the prolonged crisis.
The GOC further acknowledged National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, service chiefs, and heads of other participating agencies. Their collaboration, he said, ensured smooth coordination from start to finish.
The Army also thanked journalists and everyday Nigerians for their patience during the mission. “We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information,” the statement added, calling for ongoing public cooperation to safeguard lives nationwide.
Officials confirmed that follow-up operations remain underway to capture other syndicate members and dismantle any surviving support networks. Ultimately, the Army reiterated its commitment to sustained, intelligence-led operations targeting kidnapping and violent crime across Nigeria.
