The Ivory Coast Ecuador World Cup 2026 Group E match at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field looked like it was heading for a goalless stalemate – until Amad Diallo had other ideas. The Manchester United winger came off the bench to score an added-time winner, ending Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten run in the process and giving Les Éléphants their first World Cup win in 12 years.
Three Crossbars, Zero Goals – Then Amad Changed Everything
Ecuador were the dominant side in the first half, with John Yeboah and Alan Minda both striking the crossbar in a remarkable opening half-hour. Enner Valencia also rattled the woodwork early in the second period — three times the upright denied a goal before a ball had actually crossed the line at either end. Ivory Coast gradually wrestled control after the Ivorian tactical changes, and the introduction of Diallo from the bench in the 56th minute proved to be the defining moment.
He channelled any frustration at being left out of the starting lineup in the best possible way, sidefooting the winner smartly beyond Hernán Galíndez after a lung-busting run from Wilfried Singo down the right flank in the 90th minute. The strike was Amad’s first World Cup goal and the latest winning goal scored by a substitute in a 1-0 World Cup match since Francesco Totti’s penalty for Italy against Australia in June 2006.
Ivory Coast Poised for Knockout Stage – Ecuador Must Regroup
Ivory Coast had failed to reach the knockout round in their three previous World Cup appearances, and Emerse Faé’s side now head into their matchup against Germany with genuine momentum. For Ecuador, the woodwork can only take so much blame but with Germany having posted seven goals in their opener, a response is urgently needed. It would be a shock if Diallo does not now retain his place for the Germany match and it is fair to say that shock will be harder to pull off than the one his late goal just produced.
